At The Ridge Junior School, we believe that music is an important subject for children to experience. We give a variety of opportunities for children to sing, for example during the year 3 and 4 production at Christmas, the year 5 and 6 production in summer, weekly whole school singing assemblies and also our school choir. The school choir perform at our annual Summer Fayre and Chipping Sodbury Festival (both alongside the choir of Broadway Infant School) and at Yate Shopping Centre, giving the children a variety of opportunities to perform in front of an audience. Throughout their time at the school, children are also given opportunities to learn to play the ukulele and South American drumming – both being provided by the South Gloucestershire Music Hub.
The Charanga scheme of work is a part of the school curriculum and children are also given opportunities to learn about music in the context of their topic; for example in year 5 by studying Holst’s ‘The Planet suite’ as part of their ‘Out of this World’ topic.
As part of our whole school Thrive approach, we know that music enrichment stimulates both brain formation and mood-enhancing chemicals. These mood-enhancing chemicals can also make learning easier. Researchers have found that ‘music is inextricably linked with our deepest reward systems’.
We currently offer private keyboard, guitar and violin lessons; if you are interested in this for your child, please enquire at the office for further details and pricing.
