Design and Technology
At the Ridge Junior school we teach DT with the aim of helping our pupils to develop the creative, technical and practical skills needed for everyday life and to join in successfully in an increasingly technological world. We hope to allow them to apply all their skills to make a prototype for a variety of users and purposes. Each time the children complete a DT topic they will research their product, design, make and evaluate it. We also want them to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
DT can be taught through other topics or as a stand alone subject. It links heavily with science, maths, art and computing. Due to this, we have a dedicated STEM week which allows the children to combine their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills to produce a variety of end products.
Pupils are encouraged to apply their skills with independence and choose the correct tools and techniques for the job as we believe the children learn best through their own experiences.
